The prostate – what is it?

The Prostate, a walnut sized gland, is part of the male reproductive system and is located between the bladder and the penis, just in front of the rectum. The urethra runs through the centre of the prostate which controls the flow of urine out of the body.

The vasa deferens brings sperm from the testes to the seminal vesicles, adjacent to the prostate, where the sperm is stored.

During ejaculation, the prostate combines a prostate secretion (provided to nourish and protect the sperm) and squeezes the combination (semen) along the urethra to be expelled from the penis.
